Our solar system is made up of lots of different celestial components.

Everything that travels around or orbits our sun is part of our solar system.

Our solar system is found inside the Milky Way Galaxy

The Milky Way is just one of many different galaxies that exist in the known universe.

THE SUN

THE SUN IS THE CENTRE OF OUR SYSTEM AND IS A STAR

THE FOUR INNER PLANETS

  • Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars
  • Are made of rock and metal
  • Much smaller than the other four planets
  • Sometimes called the terrestrial planets because of the Latin word Terra

The Asteroid Belt

  • is found between Mars and Jupiter
  • Has as many as 750 000 asteroids in it
  • Only 200 asteroids are bigger than 100 km.
  • The biggest asteroids are Ceres, Vesta, Pallas, and Hygiea.
  • The entire belt is only as big as 4% of that of the Moon.

THE GAS GIANTS

  • Jupiter and Saturn
  • The two largest planets in our solar system
  • Are made of gases, largely composed of helium and hydrogen

THE ICE GIANTS

  • Uranus and Neptune
  • Made of ices that are not necessarily water
  • Mainly composed of oxygen, nitrogen, and sulfur
  • These planets are extremely cold and are under -200 degrees Celcius!

Pluto

  • a dwarf planet
  • exists far away in the Kuiper Belt
  • 75% smaller than the Moon
