Pine grove MS

closed for 2 years--major RENOVATION!
http://www.esmschools.org/

Full time and assistant

735 students

each of our schools has a FT librarian and some clerical support

BUT major changes this year...and for the next 2...

Untitled Slide

Untitled Slide

Have even added my own BOOKMOBILE to this year's plan.... (used award $$ received from an ALA I love My Librarian Award to purchase)

For 2 years (due to renovation) PGMS is located in 6 locations!
4 elementary (6th grade)
1 former Catholic school (7th grade)
1 HS wing (8th grade)
and a BOOKMOBILE! (MS LINDY!)

My role....

still full time

still connecting to all students/staff in grade 6-8

still using innovation to move forward

TRANSITIONS

to say the Least!

EXPERIENCES WITH IMPACT:

  • CLASSROOM TEACHER
  • PROFESSIONAL ORGANIZATIONS (ALA, AASL, NYLA, SSL)
  • NATIONAL SCHOOL LIBRARY PROGRAM OF THE YEAR
  • CARNEGIE I LOVE MY LIBRARIAN AWARD
  • NOPL BOARD OF TRUSTEES/COMMITTEES

Untitled Slide

Photo taken from my home overlooking Oneida Lake (south/west shore)

My perspective today will be based on my professional school library experiences since 2000, including this year's unique approach!

I was a classroom teacher for 10 years (middle school ELA/Reading) and have worked in a K-8, K-5, and now 6-8 library.

Innovative Leaders:

  • CREATE
  • CONNECT
  • COMMIT
I believe that these areas reflect the aspects of leadership through the school library that have been high impact.

CREATE

authentic OPPORTUNITIES for involvement
School libraries are ripe for ENGAGEMENT through instruction, programs, independent pursuits, and a range of partnerships.

The possibilities are limitless and with innovative leadership, engagement can totally transform the culture of a library.

As the leader or a team of leaders, we must CREATE a culture that empowers active participation.

Untitled Slide

Students who feel part of a team, part of the solution, part of the big picture are willing to contribute, volunteer, and step out of their comfort zone to make a program come to life!

Pictured: former iStaff student (now HS) was willing to play the role of REPETE the library Parrot at our MS open house this year!

Untitled Slide

It is our job as INSTRUCTIONAL LEADERS to empower students to LEAD the way

Pictured: iStaff student organizing a TECHSTRAVAGANZA event

Untitled Slide

Students must know they are contributing to the success of the program.

They want to be part of something bigger than themselves.

Pictured: HS student (former library worker at middle school) supporting graphic novel section

Untitled Slide

Need to ENGAGE beyond the walls of the library/school; ENGAGE with community and beyond!

http://www.us.worldbooknight.org/

EX--World Book Night, worked with Mayor, Village of Minoa, iStaff, parents, and community

B&N bookfairs, building events, social media, clubs, dances, plays, sports, National Library Week promos!

Untitled Slide

Engage adults to coordinate systems, projects, initiatives, campaigns, grants, and more high impact activities...find out what makes them tick and tap into that....don't assume all "helpers" want a lower level task.

Pictured: Library Assistant and Volunteer (retired teacher) support an evening literacy event at Barnes and Noble

Untitled Slide

Engage others by being a TALENT SCOUT--be one and get others to be "moles" for you! Seek out singers, artists, promoters, gamers, grant writers, community contacts, and get them on board to move things FORWARD and be win-win for all!

Examples-talent cafes, grants, book festival, clubs, events, collaborative teaching, promotions, collection development, facility issues, technology and more!

Untitled Slide

http://teenbookfestival.org/

Be RUTHLESS and TAKE CHANCES to make events become part of the Library program and culture....

ASK, ENCOURAGE, RECRUIT, PERSUADE, LEAD, and SHIFT the culture to make an impact and create change

Examples: TeenBook Fest, BOOKAPALOOZA, Techstravanganza, United Way campaign, SOUP-er bowl, FLASHMOB, and MORE!

PGMS LIBRARY iSTAFF

iStaff program has been a game changer for us! Check out more info here: http://pinegrove.libguides.com/iStaff

MOVIE of our DAY:
http://animoto.com/play/yeNwVWh1EFlI4PaiS3a23A

Changes in the program THIS year but still committed to empowering leadership opps for students.

"iStaff has quickly become a model of student leadership in our middle school. It empowers student leadership and provides a vital service to staff in the school. It's definitely a win-win. It's been so successful that an iStaff program has been established in the 5th grade one of our elementary schools."
Kieran O'Connor, Executive Director of Planning, Development, and Technology
at ESM SCHOOLS

Aligning our initiatives with District Strategic Plan

As a program leader, you must align your program with standards, curriculum, goals, mission and vision of your organizations; work WITH the big picture

http://www.esmschools.org/district.cfm?subpage=24324

Untitled Slide

Need PROBLEM SOLVERS..be honest with what you are NOT the best at and seek others to be there for you or with you....LEAD FOLLOW OR GET OUT OF THE WAY!

Untitled Slide

Share the wealth and empower problem solving, teamwork, initiative

EXAMPLES: setting up for classes, PBL events, coordination of resources, getting information OUT, school wide outreach, contests, and more

MS LINDYMOBILE....a camper for a new purpose!

Be creative about HOW to ENGAGE partners....

Look for GAPS, think about solutions, and find partners in crime to bring your ideas to LIFE!

Untitled Slide

This is my "library-ette" at the 7th grade school...I am involving students in SIGNAGE, COLLECTION DEVELOPMENT, CIRCULATION, TECHNOLOGY, and all aspects of embedding our program into all aspects of the school

It is not ideal, but there are valuable ways that students can contribute to making the program WORK for our school. Their opinions matter and the WANT to lead. Make that happen!

CONNECT

relationships & resources
You can NOT run a high impact program ALONE; even if you are "alone" in an official capacity in the library, you need to develop a TEAM of stakeholders..
Though opportunities for authentic leadership may start with your lead, to SUSTAIN and GROW these connections; we have to REACH OUT and constantly pursue new relationships that will enrich the program.

Untitled Slide

You need CREATIVITY...if not YOUR thing, find others to motivate you OR let them take on that role..

Seek OUT what you NEED!

Sometimes when I feel stagnant, I seek it out; other times people seek ME/library out to kick things up a notch!

Students are a great place to start!

Untitled Slide

Work across curriculum/content/dept/grade level (or even school)...

Who seems ready, willing, able or ALL of the above to support initiatives, programs, projects, grants, ideas, or more?

Reach out and make it happen...

Find the gaps/holes/needs and take the lead...

Pictured: ME as REPETE at OPEN HOUSE for one of our elementary schools....WHY NOT!

Untitled Slide

Connect to COMMUNITY PARTNERS (alums, parents, family, reciprocal businesses)

Pictured: Bacon Bandits Food Truck Manager...who was willing to come, teach, share, and FEED our Family and Consumer Science students for a research project the FACS teacher and I are working on.

It happened because we PARTNERED and we ASKED! Why not?

Untitled Slide

SOCIAL media...

my preference is twitter/fb but also use google plus, webinars, conf. calls, google docs/forms

https://twitter.com/sjunkins/status/445223988844040192/photo/1

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AiftIdjCeWSXdDRLRzNsVktUUGJpRW...

Untitled Slide

Connect through virtual communities--learn from others and share your perspectives....

target how/where you share to promote/celebrate/persuade/publicize/challenge what is going on in your world...

Untitled Slide

http://www.cynthialord.com/

AASL conference..the CYNTHIA LORD story

sooo many authors have done the same for librarians and students and teachers and administrators...FIND THEM and CONNECT with them! Arts in Ed, grants, TBF, Children's book fest and more

http://www.katemessner.com/authors-who-skype-with-classes-book-clubs-for-fr...

Untitled Slide

Use technology to create RICH, EMBEDDED resource portals for teacher partners, students, off-site teachers, tutors, parents, admin

LibGuides, Easybib, subscription databases, web 2.0 tools, Biblionasium, Symbaloo, ebooks, audio support tools, and established continuums to lead instructional alignment to regional and national standards.

Untitled Slide

Need MULTiPLE POINTS of ACCESS that connect users to relevant information at school and at home

Don't compete with teacher portals, pages, blogs, but embed library resources for them and vice versa...

LIBGUIDES has been a game changer for us..http://www.esmschools.org/PineGrove.cfm?subpage=30716

Promo of quality resources, integration of systems, collaborative instruction, copyright friendly materials, and more!

Untitled Slide

SYMBALOO is another tool to provide web-based access to resources
http://www.symbaloo.com/mix/onlineresources3

Encourage STUDENTS/TEACHERS to create own, make suggestions on what to include, and to promote CHOICE and VOICE in instruction....empowering use of tools through the library but not necessarily IN the library

Tools can PROMOTE collaboration in development AND integration;

Again, find GAPS/NEEDS and provide SOLUTIONS

Untitled Slide

Connecting with PARENTS and FAMILIES and BUSINESSES and your place and theirs!

http://www.barnesandnoble.com/bookfairs/

Try new events, new partners, new venues, new times, new seasons,

BPalooza stories, during dances, summer, breakfast not evening, between sports seasons, marking period hotspots, silent reading fest, techstravaganza and more

Untitled Slide

maximize partnerships....

interns, visitors, conversations, events, guest speakers panels, alumni events, campus visits and more

Untitled Slide

Talk, listen, ask, converse, share, inquire...OPEN the conversation about what students WANT, what will THEY connect with....what will they READ, what are they willing to DO, SHARE, GIVE, WRITE, SPEAK, LEAD?

Create a culture of OPEN EXCHANGE of IDEAS...

pictured--HS Library book exchange

Untitled Slide

Students....no brainer source of ideas, creativity, out of the box thinking, not what if, but WHY NOT....tap into their ideas...at ANY age!

Let them LEAD!

Untitled Slide

Give them the FLOOR and let them RULE The world! http://clrc.org/resources-services/advocacy/

Examples--Albany day, conferences, webinars, #tlchats or other twitter events, author visits, videos, skype/virtual visits, meetings, retail outlets, special events, conventions, staff development days, books, magazines, parents, your own kids, your partners, golf league, gov't officials and MORE...seek out ideas and share yours!

Untitled Slide

TIME can INSPIRE..take the TIME to find the perfect book, the perfect website, the perfect author, strategy, space, set up, partners, outreach plan, tech tool, and INSPIRATION will be twofold

The words may be minimal but the message will have HIGH IMPACT.

Untitled Slide

How will they share ideas with you?

Text? website? blog? post it note? conversation? phone call? focus group? create the culture that empowers partners to SPEAK UP and ACT ON IT..

don't be a one-way suggestion box..

Untitled Slide

How does your garden grow?

The KAYLA story--a lesson in INSPIRATION for me!

Personal pursuits MATTER--embrace and celebrate them!

Untitled Slide

Make these words part of your regular vocabulary...

WHY NOT
LET'S TRY IT
Whats the worst that can happen?
Lets do it together
Go For it...

not....i'd love to but, it's too...., we don't have the funds, maybe next year, etc etc etc.... DO It NOW, Make it happen!

Untitled Slide

Learn from others...

can't be expected to know it all...

don't WAIT until you master something to turn it loose to others!

ex-biblionasium, youtube TVproject, web 2.0 tools for presenting, gaming,

Untitled Slide

Rethink and reinvent to overcome... and get kids INVESTED

EX-techstravaganza, elf on shelf, libguides, teenbookfest, and more

Untitled Slide

Switch things up! Rethink the SPACE to match the LEARNING that is going on...plays, poetry reads, guest speakers, animals, virtual visits, panels, planetariums, maker spaces, and more!

http://www.ala.org/news/press-releases/2013/10/make-it-your-library-website...

Untitled Slide

LEADERSHIP...formal and informal opportunities...

give them the higher level projects/jobs/tasks and raise expectations

not "do this...then this..but..

How can we, what should we....we need a plan for....

Untitled Slide

create the culture, freedom to try, fail, succeed, and share learning experiences from both

Let them LEAD and teach YOU/OTHERS;

you can't do it all...divide and conquer!

Untitled Slide

AUTHENTIC LEARNING?

Is your library providing authentic learning experiences and empowering student leaders ?

if not, make it happen.....

Board of ed meetings, tours, multimedia productions, presentations, site visits, classroom presentations, media meet and greets, parent events, community outreach..

Untitled Slide

LEADERSHIP CULTURE

in whole school? in library?

Is there a culture of shared leadership? shared investment?

who is advocating for the library? who will be at a loss if its not there?

partnerships don't just happen...make them happen, make them rich, make them matter!

COMMIT

maximizing voice and choice
You have CREATED ideas and a culture for ENGAGEMENT, you CONNECT with stakeholders to move your programs forward, NOW make sure that the you are OPEN to OTHERS' input, ideas, and directions...work TOGETHER...

Now COMMIT to making it all come to life and never settle for the status quo.

The more partners have authentic opportunities for CHOICE and VOICE, the more likely the enthusiasm will be contagious.

Untitled Slide

Organizational involvement, leadership, awards, self-assessment

Untitled Slide

http://www.ala.org/membership/why-ala

balance a look at the BIG PICTURE and the day to day operations...where do you want your program to be?

what is missing?

what resources do you need? (not always $$) what resources do you have that are untapped??

What directions are leading to dead ends?

Untitled Slide

Get involved in the development of policies and standards that guide the programs in your area.

http://usny.nysed.gov/rttt/teachers-leaders/practicerubrics/Docs/nyla-rubri...

Set the standards HIGH; expect a program to solidly exemplify highest level or working towards; need culture/structure supports in place to get there

Untitled Slide

INVEST in the time and resources (funding, grants, donations, partnerships, vendors, virtual communities)
to connect students to what THEY want to READ...

BE RUTHLESS...and the impact in exponential

MS LINDYMOBILE

Maybe you don't want to buy a BOOKMOBILE but what CAN you do to offer creative solutions to problems....what can YOU do to have the MOST impact?

Untitled Slide

Untitled Slide

events like this to enjoy LIVE or archived....amazing resources, connections, ideas, perspectives

Untitled Slide

Put the extra time needed to bring books/literature to life--author visits, community reads, after hour clubs, national campaigns, and more to EMPOWER students to LEAD through LITERATURE!

http://pinegrove.libguides.com/bookapalooza

READ...no brainer for most...but read what the kids are reading and NOT reading, explore reviews, conversations, authors, journals, blogs, and more!

Untitled Slide

http://ischool.syr.edu/newsroom/index.aspx?recid=1592

maximize partnerships....offer to speak, present, share;

host interns, visitors, conversations, events, guest speakers panels, alumni events, campus visits and more

Untitled Slide

Invest the time needed to create user friendly resources, materials, portals, guides, media...

Yes, it takes TIME but the impact is WORTH the investment.

Untitled Slide

Libraries DO matter and STRONG school LIbraries build strong students.... and impact an entire school community

Grow your team of stakeholders and advocate for what is right for teaching and learning

http://www.ala.org/aasl/sites/ala.org.aasl/files/content/aaslissues/advocac...

Untitled Slide

empower students to make CONNECtioNS that they might not make on own...

what can YOU help them see about themselves and their community?

Untitled Slide

Look at the road ahead of you....

What opportunities can YOU see amongst the clouds?

What will make your journey as a school leader have the MOST IMPACT?
