PRESENTATION OUTLINE

EMPHYSEMA

WHAT IS THE DISEASE?

  • Progressive loss of lung function characterized by:
  • Decrease in the total # of alveoli
  • Enlargement of the remaining alveoli
  • The progressive destruction of the walls of the remaining alveoli

CAUSES OF THE DISEASE

  • Long term exposure to airborne irritants such as:
  • Tobacco smoke
  • Dust, chemicals, or smoke used in the workplace
  • Air pollution

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS

  • Breathing becomes increasingly rapid, shallow, and difficult because the alveoli are destroyed
  • The lungs expand in an effort to compensate for loss of capacity
  • Expansion of the lungs sometimes causes the chest to assume an enlarged barrel shape

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS CONT.

  • Shortness of breath
  • Chronic cough
  • Wheezing
  • Bluish tint to skin, lips, or nails
  • Need to lean forward to breathe when sitting

TREATMENT

  • There is no real "treatment" for this disease
  • Once lung damage has occured, it cannot be reversed
  • The only treatment available focuses on improvement of symptoms and prevention of further damage
  • Treatment can relieve symptoms, treat complications, and minimize disability
  • Stopping smoking is the most effective thing you can do in early stages

PREVENTION/ MANAGEMENT

  • Do not smoke/quit smoking
  • Wear protective gear in the workplace
