ECOLOGY

SHELBY SMITH/ PERIOD 7

SPECIALIST

  • Defenition: can only use a small range of resources
  • A river otter is an example of a specialist because it can only use the

GENERALIST

  • Defenition: can use a wide range of recources
  • A racoon is an example of a generalist because it can use many different resources, whether its living by a lake or looking for food out of a trash can.

CONFORMER

  • Defenition: any organism whos internal enviorment is highly influenced by external factors
  • An example of a conformer would be a frog because its normal enviorment is extremly influenced by a different enviorment.

REGULATOR

  • Defenition: any organism that can maintain a constant internal environment largely independently of the external environment
  • An example of a regulator would be a fish because it can maintain a constant internal enviorment

MUTUALISM

  • Defenition: a substance or process that regulates or controls another, as in a growth regulator that regulates the growth of an organism
  • An example of a mutualism are ants because they control one another

PARASITISM

  • Defenition: a form of symbiosis in which one organism (called parasite) benefits at the expense of another organism usually of different species (called host)
  • An example of a parasitism is a catapiller because it benefits off of other organisms such as leaves, because thats what it eats

COMMENSALISM

  • Defenition: a form of symbiosis between two organisms of different species in which one of them benefits from the association whereas the other is largely unaffected or not significantly harmed or benefiting from the relationship
  • An example of commensalism are sheep because humans use the sheeps wool for clothing and it doesnt affect humans at all

PREDATION

  • Defenition: a form of symbiotic relationship between two organisms of unlike species in which one of them acts as predator that captures and feeds on the other organism that serves as the prey
  • An example of a predation is a shark because sharks pray on almost any organism they can find

COMPETITION

  • Defenition: a symbiotic relationship between or among living things for resources, such as food, space, shelter, mate, ecological status, etc.
  • An example of a competition animal is almost any living thing. Everything seems to be competing for something, whether its food or just some attention
