Location and Population

  • At one point, the Powhatans ruled much of Virginia, so, consequently, the British destroyed them for the land of Virginia.
  • While the original Powhatan population was 14,000, the Powhatans are nonexistant.

Symbols

  • The Powhatan seal was a large white bird, and it was resting on a rainbow surrounding a forest

Religion

  • The Powhatans had two major gods; they were Ahone and Okeus
  • Okeus was god of death and destruction, whereas Ahone was god of life.
  • Okeys required sacrifices, though Ahone didn't require that.
  • While the Powhatans had more gods, Ahone and Okeus were the main ones.

Food

  • Powhatans ate deer, fish, and small game gathered by the men while the women gardened vegetables.
  • In order for the people to provide food, the men hunted, and the women gardened.

Name

  • The Powhatans were named after their first chief even though his real name was was Wahunsonacock.

Free Time

  • Because the Powhatans worked so hard, they had very little free time.
  • The children were usually helping their parents, but they had toys such as dolls and fake bow and arrows.

Stories

  • Pocahontas was a famous Powhatan, although the story told by Captain John Smith was probably just that, a story.
  • Another famous story was "How the Indians Got So Many Tribes", even though it isn't true.

Lodging

  • The Powhatans resided in longhouses, 200 feet long, and often with an entire clan.
