SALAMANDERS

WOODLAND SALAMANDERS

  • The life cycle of the salamander depends on the type of salamander.
  • Woodland salamanders lay their eggs on land.
  • Woodland salamander's young look like small adults.

VERNAL SALAMANDERS

  • The vernal salamander lays it's eggs in pools of water.
  • The egg hatches and the young larvae use gills to breath.
  • The larvae grow front and back legs. (Water dog)
  • The water dog leaves the water and climbs up on land (juvenile)
  • The juvenile stays on land until it is ready to mate.

WHAT IF

  • If there is a lack of food on land or not enough breeding.
  • The larva will stay in the water and lay eggs underwater instead.
  • This is called neoteny.
