BUDDHISM

Siddhartha Gautama.
Created Buddhism.
He became a holy man after seeing sickness, death, and misery. He traveled to find enlightenment and was finally awake. Therefore, his name became "Buddha" which means "The Awakened One."

DUKKHA
Suffering exists: (Suffering is real and almost universal. Suffering has many causes: loss, sickness, pain, failure, the impermanence of pleasure.)

SAMUDAYA
There is a cause for suffering. (It is the desire to have and control things. It can take many forms: craving of sensual pleasures; the desire for fame; the desire to avoid unpleasant sensations, like fear, anger or jealousy.)

NIRODHA
There is an end to suffering. (Suffering ceases with the final liberation of Nirvana (a.k.a. Nibbana). The mind experiences complete freedom, liberation and non-attachment. It lets go of any desire or craving.)

MAGGA
In order to end suffering, you must follow the Eightfold Path.

BRANCHES AND/OR VARIETIES

  • Two main branches formed from India, and to this day, they have expanded.
  • The two branches spread to Southeast Asia and East Asia. A third branch started in the north.
  • All of these branches started in India and moved across Asia.

BRANCHES

  • Theravada Buddhism: Oldest form of Buddhism, taught orally in Pali language.
  • Mahayana Buddhism:Possibility of universal salvation, opened up Buddhahood to all.
  • Vajrayana or Tantric Buddhism: Included esoteric ritual texts designed to achieve ->
  • physical, mental, and spiritual breakthroughs.

  • There is an estimated 360 million followers in Buddhism faith.
  • Buddhism makes up around 6% of the world's population.
  • Buddhism is the fourth largest religion in the world.

TYPES
The three main types of Buddhism are
Theravada(teachings of the elders), Mahayana(the great vehicle), and Vajrayana(the thunderbolt vehicle).

THE SACRED BOOK OF BUDDHISM IS CALLED THE TRIPITAKA.

THE TRIPITAKA
Written in an ancient Indian language, the Tripitaka called Pali is very close to the language that the Buddha himself spoke.The Tripitaka is a very large book, much like the Catholic Bible.The English translation of the Tripitaka takes up nearly forty volumes.The Tripitaka means "three baskets" and is referred to as the Pali Canon.

IMPORTANT PEOPLE

  • Gautama Buddha, also known as Siddhārtha Gautama, taught and founded Buddhism.
  • Ananda was the Buddahs cousin who recited, memorized, and taught the Buddah's teachings.
  • Dalai lama was the leader of the Tibet and Tibetan Buddhism.
  • Gautama was the given name of the historical Buddha.
  • Sakyamuni means "Sage of the Sakya tribe." Which is another name for the historical Buddha.
