  • Born in Rutland, Vermont

PRRSONAL LIFE

  • Married: Demarias Lamb in 1827
  • 9 children in all
  • Served as president of the National Bank
  • Served as Moline's mayor for two years
  • Died at home

INVENTIONS

  • First successful steel plow in 1837
  • Manufacturer who founded Deere & Co

STEEL PLOW

  • Did not like cast-iron plows
  • Thought steel plows would handle soil
  • 1837: developed the 1st Cast-Steel Plow
  • Sold his first one in 1838
  • By 1841, he manufactured 75-100 per year

DEERE & CO

  • American corporation
  • Manufactured machinery & desial engines
  • Also drivetrains and lawn equipment
  • Provides financial services
  • Slogan: "Nothing runs like a Deere"
