PRESENTATION OUTLINE

OPTICAL DENSITY

  • The speed of light in a material is related to the material's optical density
  • One measure of optical density is the material’s index of refraction.

INDEX OF REFRACTION

  • The index of refraction (n) is the ratio of the speed of light in a vacuum to the speed of light in the material.
  • Speed of light in a vacuum/speed of light in material=c/v

TOTAL INTERNAL REFLECTION

  • If the angle of incidence is increased further, the light ray bounces off the boundary back into the original material.

CRITICAL ANGLE OF INCIDENCE

  • The angle of incidence where this phenomenon begins is called the critical angle of incidence

FIBER OPTICS

  • Fiber optics is an important and growing field of technology with diverse applications.
  • Optical fibers work on the principle of total internal reflection.
  • Fiber optics has many uses in endoscopy—the medical procedure in which the body’s interior is viewed directly by use of an endoscope inserted through a natural opening or small incision.
