PRESENTATION OUTLINE
Camera work
The camerawork thought this music video is very interesting to watch. Within the opening shot we see a slow zoom in a large empty room which then turns to a smooth tracking shot scanning the wall. It creates that illusion that someone is walking into the room instead of the camera. This camera then goes to a close up while zooming in to the wall. A mid shot is frequently used Justin as the first time we see him, he us just a dark figure and then the lighting dramatically changes so we can see his face. The camera continues to zoom in as he sings so we can see his emotions and the facial expressions. There isn't much camerawork because of the lack of movement in the music video. We always see closeups, or mid shots, apart from when we see the people drawing in the gallery. The Mise En Scene doesn't change and it stays consistent in the music video. There are only two locations which is the black studio and the art gallery with the drawings in. Then the colours used are very plain throughout but make the drawings stand out. The costumes are very simple for Justin the don't show off money at all which he usually does in his music videos. He is just wearing normal clothing with a white top and green shirt. This shows that the main focus isn't on him.
EDITING -
This music video is mainly based on the clean editing. This music video wouldn't of been done without the editing. As this music video is stop motion video which is done by taking loads of pictures and then putting them all together to make it look like its moving. There isn't much movement of the music video apart from Justin dancing. The editing really matches up to the speed of us been shown the art and his dance moves. This draws us in because it is so unusual but inspiring. We also see the use of special effects and we also see paint spreading over Justin's face and leaking from his eyes. This is done to show his possible hidden emotions.
Andrew Goodwin -
Justin has used a few of Goodwins theories. The first is the relationship between music and the visuals. He uses this throughout the music video. We hear the beat of the song and as soon as we get into the chorus there is suddenly millions of people's drawings quickly shown over Justin to stick and match to the tempo. The second he uses a little bit of which is the artists visual style. As this is a very different style/genre for him, he hasn't used the "money" and "fashion" as much. However we to focus not only on the drawings but on his iconic dances moves as the drawings flow. Justin hasn't really stuck to any of the other theories. However we do see some lyrics and visual because Justin sings "standing all alone" and he is the only main figure we see in the music video and in the shot he is on his own.
My Opinion
Personal i think this music very is very unique. It hasn't followed the "Norm", which i think is good because artists are getting stuck with having to show off money. This music video was directed by Brewer who isn't very well known at the moment but is apart of pretty bird. This music video is showing off still Justin but mainly focused on the drawings and almost showing how much time it took to make the music video because of the amount of people that took part to do the drawings. This music type of music video i feel should be done more because its so creative and inspiring.
Representation -
This music doesn't have much representation shown. Gender is a strong one that comes through because Justin is a male. However he challenges the stereotypes a little because we usually think were going to see women dancing around the artist but here we don't. This music video is the opposite really. However we do see young males as been stereotypical very good at dancing and Justin shows off this skin towards the end. However the song is actually a emotional song as Justin is almost telling the world his true feelings. We do actually see a closeup of the paint dripping from his eyes which tells us Justin is letting his emotions out.
Music video Style/Info
This music video is mainly performance however combined with a little concept. We do see Justin dancing and singing throughout the music video. However the concept is very creative and inspiring. The upbeat song works really well with the fast paced editing of the drawings. Justin is a Canadian singer and songwriter. His current manager, Scooter Braun, first discovered him through his YouTube videos in 2007.
