FEDERAL BUREAUCRACY

  • The federal bureaucracy is all the agencies,people and procedures in the federal Government
  • The president is chief administrator of the Federal Government
  • Administration-the governments many admististrators and agencies that enact/enforce policy
  • Federal bureaucracy is organized into to areas of specialization

STRUCTURE OF EXECUTIVE BRANCH

  • Executive Office of the President (EOP)
  • Executive Departments (Cabinet Depts)
  • Independent Agencies (regulatory agencies)

EXECUTIVE OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENT

  • The name department is reserved for agencies of cabinet rank
  • Titles include agency,administration,commission,corporation,and authority
  • The EOP is an umbrella agency of sparate agencies
  • The EOP is the presidents right arm staffed with his closest advisors
  • The EOP was established by congress in 1939

THE WHITE HOUSE OFFICE

  • The white house stafe is made up of the presidents closest political staff
  • Postions include chief of staff,press secretary,counsel to the President,etc..

NATIONAL SECURITY COUNCIL

  • NSC advises the president on all matters that relate to national security
  • Members include the Vice President and secretaries of state and defense

ADDITIONAL AGENCIES

  • Office of management and budget(OMB)
  • Office of National Drug Control Policy
  • Council of Economic Advisers

EXECUTIVE DEPARTMENTS

  • The executive departments are traditional units of federal administration
  • Each department is headed by a secretary(except Dept of Justice)
  • Each department is made up of a number of subunits,both staff and line
  • Executive Depts vary in terms of visibility,size,and importance

THE CABINENT

  • Is a very informal advisory body for the president
  • Tradition makes them the heads of executive depts
  • The president appoints the head of each department with senate approval

INDEPENDENT AGENCIES

  • Created by congress and located outside the executive departments
  • Independent agencies do nit have cabinent status

INDEPENTEND REGULATORY COMMISSIONS

  • They ar largely out of reach of the presidents conrol

  • Group of public employees who preform work for the government
  • Patronage-giving government jobs to supporters and friends
