What is an IWB?

An interactive whiteboard (IWB) is an interactive display system that is commonly used in educational settings. The IWB forms a link between a teaching surface and a digital projector and computer. The ‘teaching surface’ is most frequently a large wall mounted panel that allows the user to operate the computer via interacting with the projected image.

What Does The Research Say?

The study results indicated that, in general, using interactive whiteboards was associated with a 16 percentile point gain in student achievement. This means that we can expect a student at the 50th percentile in a classroom without the technology to increase to the 66th percentile in a classroom using whiteboards.

Things to Remember

  • Make sure the activity is not passive. Engage studnets while you or a classmate is at the board.
  • Activities that you lead with the whole class can later be done as a independent practice activity /workstation.

Group note taking

Use the board as you would your plain old regular whiteboard, but with one difference. SAVE the notes! Most IWB vendors include software that serves as a blank canvas for creating presentations and taking notes. Encourage your students to come up and jot down a few discoveries they make during independent work time or notes that might help the rest of the class on a particular topic or project. Save the notes at the end of the class—you now have a digital record of the day’s learning! Print out the notes for later student consumption.

Virtual Manipulatives & Online Interactives (WEEBLY: tools for math)

National Library of Virtual Manipulatives - A wide range of virtual manipulatives that work with almost all IWBs;

Interactive Whiteboard Resources from Topmarks - a useful UK-based website that includes an index of dozens of websites, online activities and web-based resources that play nicely with many IWBs.

Take A Virtual Tour or Virtual Field Trip
(WEEBLY: tools for cross-curricular use)

Many important places with cultural heritage and academic value offer virtual tours online, which can be accessed through the IWB and shown to students. Some of them are also interactive, which will keep the children interested and engaged. Virtual tours are also a good idea before and after a real visit to a location, both as an introduction and a summary of the trip.

Go for a ride
(WEEBLY: tools for Social Studies)

Did you know Google Earth has a flight mode? You can virtually fly over the world via your computer. When you team that up with the 3D layer available via the interface, you can fly through cities and landscapes. Imagine being able to take your students to the Swiss Alps or fly past the New York skyline.

Video Calling
Three ways to use Skype in the Classroom

Collaborate with other classes, no matter where they are

Find guest speakers and invite them into your classroom

Talk It Over With Team

Next week, how can we use 1 tool for Reading, and 1 tool for Math?
