  • Identify the Middle Ages
  • Examine what Clovis shows us about MA.
  • Analyze a primary source text on Clovis.

Middle Ages

  • The 1,000 year period after the collapse of Rome.
  • 476 A.D. - 1453 A.D. 

Early Middle Ages

  • First few hundred years after empire fell.
  • German tribes set up small kingdoms in former Roman provinces.
  • Imperial laws, monuments, roads, and public services declined.
  • Far less learning, writing, and reading in Europe!

Europe in Early Middle Ages

  • Former provinces often ruled by chief and his warriors.
  • They set up their own small, independent kingdoms.
  • Warriors pledged loyalty to their chief (or king) and were given plunder.

Clovis

  • In 457 he became king of the Salian Franks.
  • Launched a campaign of conquest to become king of ALL Franks.
  • One by one he killed the other Frankish kings.
  • He also fought other tribes and killed almost all of his male family.
  • Why?
