PRESENTATION OUTLINE

AFRICAN COLONIZATON

BY MEGAN DEVRIES

BERLIN CONFERENCe

  • It got started because Europeans didn't want to fight over Africa
  • 14 of these European nations attended the Berlin Conference which lasted from 1884-1885
  • Not one African ruler was invited to attend this conference
  • Europeans divided Africa without caring about where African ethnic or linguistic groups lived

EUROPEAN IMPERIALISM

  • European global expansion had began in the fifteenth century
  • Latin America and the seaports of Asia and Africa were the first to be colonized by Europeans
  • The African climate, disease and geography delayed most European colonization until the 19th century
  • England was the leading European colonial power

IMPERIALISTIC METHODS

  • Guns
  • Steamboats
  • Medicine
  • Military Forces

END OF COLONIALISM

  • Europe gave up Africa because it was just becoming too much
  • Africa was then a mess and civil war broke out
  • Africa also didn't know how to rule themselves after they were on their own
  • A new group of rulers in Africa had to rise up and take control even though they didn't have much experience

LASTING EFFECTS

  • Colonialism completely tarnished the rich traditional practices and beliefs of Africans
  • It also divided Africa and created more problems for the country to unite
  • Colonialism left severe ethnic division in countries such as South Africa and Zimbabwe
  • Africa could have been different if colonialism did not exist
