DAVID

1501-04, MARBLE
Michelangelo's David is a very idealized depiction of a teenage herd boy. One the first freestanding nudes of the Renaissance, Michelangelo used the Greek technique of contrapposto, or the natural weight-shifting stance, in this piece. It stands 17' tall and features a muscular, glorified David with a confident look on his face with his famous slingshot draped over his right shoulder.

PIETA

1598-99, MARBLE
Michelangelo finished the Pieta in his early 20s and was the only piece he ever signed. It depicts the Virgin Mary mourning the death of her don, Christ, after he has been removed from the cross. She looks too young and Christ's body is too small so that it enhances the emotional impact...a young mother who is mourning the death of her young son.
