R is for Running

After Montag's house is burned down, all he can do is run. He runs through town avoiding people, but almost gets hit by a car. Montag goes to Faber's house for a drink and to talk to him.

S is for Salamander

The Salamander is the firemen's fire truck. Montag knows that something is wrong when Beatty drives the Salamander to his house. The Salamander is the symbol of the department.

T is for Time

When Montag is on the run from the police, he starts thinking about burning. He concluded that the Sun burned time and the Firemen burned everything else. One of them would have to stop or else everything would be burned. He also knew that the sun would not stop, so the Firemen would have to change.

U is for Union

When Montag meets the Hobos of Harvard, they talk about how all their books are kept. Books are all memorized, page by page, by multiple people. In order to have the book as a whole, the people must unite to write down what they know.

V is for Viewing

As Montag is being hunted down, the Hound fails to find him. Society needs an end and it needs to please the viewers, so they kill a tracked guy out for a walk. They are careful to not let the viewers be able to tell if it's Montag.

W is for Warped

In the last pages, Granger talks about how the city is like a Phoenix. It is dead in the bombs but can be reborn in an unwarped society. Granger also wants to make a mirror factory so people can see themselves as they really are.

X is for X-Ray

An X-Ray goes over a body and allows to see its bones and inner workings. You would be able to see your inner self. This is a metaphor to the city. When Montag gets knowledge and books, it's like showing an X-Ray over his world. It's definitely not what he expected.

Y is for Youth

In his intellectual "youth" Montag had no clue what was going on in the world. It was blank and meaningless and he was not happy. Every since he escaped the police with a purpose, he has matured in himself and has grown to see the world as it really is.

Z is for Zest

When Montag actually reads his books, he is filled with a zest for it. So much that he memorizes Ecclesiastes and part of Revelation. He has a purpose and is hungry for more.
