Media & Social Media: Differences

  • Tone
  • Frequency
  • Personal vs. Professional

they're More alike than you think

  • Expectation of objectivity
  • Need for verification
  • Reputation for accuracy and fairness
  • Libel and copyright rules apply
  • An extension of your employer

Personal vs. Professional

Find Your Balance
It doesn’t matter - you’re a journalist no matter where you publish or what the medium may be
Don’t post anything you wouldn’t be comfortable having your name on in print or on the website.

opinions and Tone

  • Choose your topics wisely
  • Think analysis over editorializing
  • Consider: "Would I put this in the newspaper?"
  • Be as personal as you are comfortable
It isn’t that you can’t share opinions, it’s that you carefully choose the topics you will spout off about - your kids, your favorite sports teams, hobbies, etc.
Typically best to avoid polarizing language or topics unless your job is to do so.

When do I Post this news?

  • When I have verified the facts
  • When other sources I trust have verified the facts
  • When there's news elsewhere my readers expect
  • When I'm explaining something already published
You don't need a lot of facts, per se, but the ones you have need to be for real. Sourcing needs to be solid.
