What was one thing that you found about the culture of the nation you are researching?
Objectives
- Reflect on the problems facing the indigenous peoples of Latin America.
- Discuss what you think the root causes of some of these problems are.
Essential Question:
Why is there so much poverty among the native peoples of Central America and what is being done to combat it?
Background:
In the 16th century, the Spanish conquered much of what is today called Latin America.
They imposed a rigid class order with native Spaniards being on top and other people being on the bottom.
Other Classes:
Mestizos - Natives and Spaniards who intermarried.
Native Peoples - Aztecs, Pueblo, Maya, and others.
Slaves - Africans enslaved and brought to work on plantations.
