Pelourinho - Salvador / Brazil

Published on Nov 18, 2015

Extremely rich in historical monuments dating from the XVII through the XIX centuries, the Pelourinho was Salvador's center during the Portuguese Colonial Period. Known as "Pelô" by local Bahianos, Pelourinho means Pillory. The name comes from the whipping post located in the central plaza where African slaves were punished in those days. Salvador was the first capital of Brazil and is one of the oldest colonial cities in the Americas.
