What is a Amphitheatre?

An Amphitheater is an open-air venue for entertainment performances

There are three types of amphitheaters. There are the ancient Romans, contemporary, and the natural amphitheaters

Contemporary Amphitheatre

  • Include bandshells which are standing structures
  • Can hold anywhere from 20,000 to 30,000 people
  • These theatres are more popular today
  • Shoreline and Hollywood Bowl are popular contemporary amphitheatres

NATURAL AMPHITHEATRES

  • Usually found in a steep mountain or rock
  • Used for festivals and performances
  • Drakensburg, Supernatural, and The Gorge are popular ones

ANCIENT ROMAN AMPHITHEATRES

  • First Roman empires were built in the first century B.C.
  • Smaller amphitheatres could hold from 12,000 to 14,000
  • The larger theatres can hold from 40,000 to 60,000 people

INTERESTING FACTS

  • Two famous theatres: Colesseum and Verona Arena
  • Amphitheatres were used for gladior combats and chariot races
  • Amphitheatres are still used for their acoustics
  • The Colesseum can hold 50,000 and has 80 entrances
