MULTIDIMENSIONAL REACH TEST : JOSH PENDLEBURY & HANNAH DULA

POPULATION

  • Ages 18-64
  • 65+
  • Mainly given to older adults

ASSESSES

  • Anteroposterior and Mediolateral
  • Meaning: front, back, right and left
  • Assesses the limit of stability

TIME

  • 5-10 minutes
  • Quick and effective

PROCEDURE

  • A yardstick is affixed to a telescoping tripod or the wall at the level of the patient
  • Prior to the reach the yardstick is leveled so that it is horizontal to the floor
  • Lift arm to shoulder height; reach as far forward as possible
  • No movement of feet, must try to stay alongside yardstick (can be discarded)
  • Patients use their best strategies to accomplish these tasks

CONT'D

  • Patient is given the command to lean as far back as they can.
  • Patients use their arm of choice for: forward and back measurements.
  • Respective arms are used for right and left reach.
  • Index fingers are measured for final measurements
  • Repeated.
