PRESENTATION OUTLINE
The Great Wall is not located in any given city. The main Great Wall line stretches from Shanhaiguan in the east, to Lop Lake in the west, along an arc that roughly delineates the southern edge of Inner Mongolia. This wall takes up 4,000 miles of space in northern china.
The Great Wall was built for preventing incursions from barbarian nomads into the Chinese empire.Though the wall never fully protected China from invaders, it came to function more as a physiological barrier between Chinese civilization and the world.
The wall was not built all at one time. It was built over many many years. Construction on the first section began between the 7th and 6th century BC, and the last work on the wall was done between the 14th and 17th centuries. The Northern Wei dynasty (386- 535AD) repaired and extended the existing wall to defend against tribe attacks. The Bei Qi kingdom (550-577) built or repaired more than 900 miles of the wall.
The Great Wall is 25 feet tall and 15-30 feet wide. That's wide enough for two cars to drive on.
There is a Great Wall because it was key to protecting agriculture and resisting cavalry of the Huns and other warrior tribes from the north. The advantages of the enormous barrier diminished with the advancement of gunpowder and other weaponry.
