"What sets place- and community-based education apart is the way that it strives to bring all of these strands together into a common framework for curriculum thinking and school design aimed at deepening students' connection to their communities in ways that make those communities better places to live." (Sobel, 2010, p. 21)

Examples

WHy?

  • emphasizes authentic, real-world learning
  • increases academic achievement
  • develops stronger community ties
  • enhances appreciation for the natural world
  • heightens commitment to being an active, contributing citizen
  • meets many standards at once

But HOW?

  • curriculum clearly grounded in local issues and possibilities
  • willingness of teachers to step beyond the lessons presented in texts and workbooks

  • develop partnerships with agencies outside the school
By its very nature, it cannot be standardized and will reflect the unique circumstances of the specific area, community, and school.
