Nouns

  • A word that names a PERSON, PLACE, THING, or IDEA/CONCEPT
  • Ex: Person: An ARTIST always cleans his tools afterwards.
  • Ex: Place: There used to be a PARK next to the MALL! 
  • Ex: Thing: Did you happen to find your lost SUITCASE?
  • Ex: Idea: COURAGE isn't always visible to people.

Extra: common vs. proper nouns

  • A proper noun names a specific one-of-a-kind item
  • A proper noun always begins with a capital letter
  • Ex: That city (Houston) is very humid in the summer!
  • Ex: I ate cookies (Oreos) during lunch today.
  • Ex: I ordered from a restaurant (McDonalds) just now.

verbs

  • A word that shows action or state of being
  • Ex: Past tense: I RACED to the finish line!
  • Ex: Present tense: The cat JUMPS from table to table.
  • Ex: Future tense: We WILL PLAY a game at the nearby gym.

adjectives

  • A word that describes or gives more info about a noun/pronoun
  • Ex: Comparative adj.: She is definitely not OLDER than my sister! 
  • Ex: Superlative adj:: This is probably the LONGEST novel I ever read.
  • Ex: Possessive adj.: My doctor cares about HIS patients.
  • Ex: Demonstrative adj.: We want to know if THIS belongs to you?

pronouns

  • A word used in place of a noun
  • Ex: Sarah (SHE) would like more ice cream please!
  • Ex: The bridge (IT) collapsed after years of use.
  • Ex: That boy was not very nice to Sarah and Janice (THEM).
  • Ex: Could you please give that to Mr. Mister! (ME)

adverbs

  • A word that describes a verb, an adjective, or another adverb
  • Tells where, when, how, or to what extent
  • Ex: Look at him PATIENTLY waiting for his food!
  • Ex: That baby is QUIETLY sleeping in her crib.
  • Ex: That is VERY hot so don't touch it.

conjunctions

  • A word that connects words or groups of words
  • Ex: I enjoy jazz AND classical music.
  • Ex: We could go with you BUT we are very busy today.
  • Ex: Should I buy medicine SO I can get better?
  • Ex: Her skin is AS soft as a pillow!

prepositions

  • A word that shows the relationship of a noun or pronoun to another word
  • Ex: The crook must be hiding BETWEEN those two buildings!
  • Ex: I am going to sit BESIDE my crying baby brother.
  • Ex: How far is it FROM Dallas to Fort Worth?
  • Ex: Why are you sleeping UNDER your bed?

interjections

  • A word that expresses surprise or strong feeling
  • It can be any word, phrase, or short clause that captures emotion
  • Ex: You made it to the very top. WAY TO GO!
  • Ex: HUH? I thought you went with your mom to the store?
  • Ex: I forgot to set my alarm. OOPS.
