The story starts out with Jacob giving Joseph a coat because he is his favorite son. This makes Joseph's brothers jealous. Later Joseph then talks about dreams that he has that show Joseph ruling over his family. This causes Joseph's older brother to call him "dreamer boy", and they decide that they want to kill him. Joseph's nicer brother Ruben suggests not killing him, but putting him in a hole until they think of a better plan, so they do. Ruben plans to go and save Joseph later, but his other brothers get there first and sell Joseph as a slave to Egypt. Jacob then believed that his favorite son was dead

SYMBOLISM

  • the coat: symbol of his fathers favoritism
  • dream: symbol of ruling over his brothers
  • meaning: don't covet the possessions of others

Authors point
-Joseph's brothers get very jealous over something they can't have.
-the authors are teaching us a lesson to be happy with the blessings God has given us and don't covet the blessings other people receive

What does this mean for our faith?
As Catholics, we should try to be like Ruben and maintain peace. We should try and make decisions that involve the right thing to do

Modern day twist:
Joseph– Josie
the principal's favorite student
Rueben– Ruby
tries to save Josie
Jacob– Jackie
principal
Older Brothers– other classmates
jealous of Josie

-instead of a coat, it is an iPhone
-instead of throwing Joseph in a hole, we lock Josie in the bathroom
-instead of Joseph being sold into slavery, Josie is taken to detention
