AIR POLLUTION

  • Occurs at three levels: Global, Regional, and Local.
  • Damages the ozone
  • Creates smaug

GLOBAL SCALE AIR POLLUTION

  • Burning of fossil fuels in factories and vehicles
  • This causes global warming
  • Global Warming occurs when the atmosphere of earth heats up
  • Can damage ozone by UV rays from the sun

LOCAL AIR POLLUTION

  • Urban areas
  • 3 basic components: Carbon Minoxide, Hydrocarbons, Particulates
  • Most concentrated in southern California
  • Mostly cause by motor vehicle emission.

SOLID WASTE POLLUTION

  • 4 pounds per person a day
  • Mostly paper products and metals
  • Sanitary landfill = common strategy for disposal
  • Other alternatives: Incineration
  • Heavy metals are especially difficult to dispose of

SOLID WASTE POLLUTION CONT.

  • In 2010 3.93 billion pounds of toxic chemicals were released
  • Breathing air with toxic waste can cause cancer and chronic ailments

WATER POLLUTION

  • Water serves human purposes
  • Point source pollution = specific location
  • Non-Point pollution = comes from a large diffused area
  • Kills wildlife, leads to difficulties in food for humans

POINT VS. NONPOINT

  • Point source comes from manufacturers and sewage
  • Nonpoint pollutes more widespread
  • Nonpoint comes mainly from agriculture- fertilizers
