PRESENTATION OUTLINE
Aristotle
384-322 BCE
He thought that the earth was the center of all things. His model had the moon, sun, planets, and stars in circles around the Earth.
Aristarchus
310-230 BCE
He created the Heliocentric model of the solar system. He attempted to measure the distance between the moon and sun. His observations were too small, but they did help a lot.
Ptolemy
100-170 CE
He was an astronomer, geographer, and mathematician. He made the geocentric model. He believed that the planets moved in small circles that eventually got larger and larger.
Copernicus
1473-1543
He agreed with Ptolemy that the planets move in perfect circles, but he put it into a heliocentric model. This was the first step into modern models of the solar system.
Kepler
1571-1630
He was a German mathematician and astronomer. He realized that the planetary motion is not a perfect circle and more of an ellipse. He created three principals that are still used today.
Galileo
1564-1642
He invented the telescope. He made observations that showed that the earth was not the only object that could orbit.
Heliocentric Model
The model that states that Earth and other planets orbit the sun.
Geocentric Model
The model that has the Earth in the center
