A LONG TIME AGO IN NORTH AMERICA,

ACORNS WERE AN IMPORTANT STAPLE FOOD FOR THE LUISEÑO.

AFTER THE LUISEÑO

GATHERED ALL OF THE ACORNS, THEY STORED THEM IN GRANARIES.

The Luiseño used a hammer stone to take off the acorn shell. The winnowing tray is then used to take off the extra skin.

A MOTOR AND PESTLE

WERE USED TO GRIND ACORNS INTO A FLOUR CALLED MEAL.

THE LUISEÑO USED A PROCESS CALLED LEACHING

TO REMOVE THE TANIC ACID FROM THE ACORN MEAL TO MAKE IT EDIBLE.

FINALLY, THEY COOKED THE MEAL IN

AN OLLA AND STIRRED IT WITH A PADDLE.

IN CONCLUSION, ACORNS WERE A VALUBLE
