poverty

  • poor housing
  • poor nutrition
  • limited social opportunity
  • limited post-secondary funding
  • problems providing for kids

poverty level

relative or absolute?

absolute poverty

not cool...

fortunately for us

doesn't really exist in canada

relative poverty

compared to how others are living in canada - not equal

things could be worse for poor canadians

food, safe water, shelter, clothing not really a worry

but some people feel poor

and we see them as poor - relative to the rest

exclusion

from things we take for granted

low-income cut off (Lico)

identifying levels at which familys are considered poor

35% on food, clothing, shelter

average canadian household - before tax (44% after tax)

spend more than 20% above national average

classified as worse off

poverty line

government doesn't like this word - low income cut off preferred...

scales with family size

if you have more people living with you - lico can be higher

15% child poverty rate

pretty bad for a developed country

how many people are accessing food banks

good benchmark

use of food banks on the rise

not a good sign...

working poor

people who are working for low wages

welfare poor

non-working poor: elderly, illness, disability, single parents with kids

let's be smarter here ladies and gents...

poor mental/physical health

can't take care of themselves

rural + seasonal dependancy

small time farmers without fancy equipment

why is it so hard to get out of poverty?
