FACTS ABOUT D-DAY

  • Originally called 'Operation Neptune'
  • The weather was far from ideal
  • There was 5 sectors in the attack
  • D-Day and H-Hour stand for the day and hour of the attack
  • The plan of the operation began in 1943

FACTS ABOUT D-DAY

  • There were 10,000 Ally Casualties and 4,414 confirmed dead
  • There were 4,000-9,000 casualties for the Axis
  • Around 24,000 British, American, and Canadian troops landed after midnight
  • The blueprints of the plan were codenamed 'Operation Bodyguard'
  • The attack started in Western Europe, and led to France's liberation

FACTS ABOUT THE ATTACK (U.S.A.)

  • Battle of Normandy lasted from June 1944 to August 1944
  • Resulted in Allied liberation of Western Europe from Nazi Germany's control
  • Codenamed operation Overlord
  • In January 1944, General Dwight Eisenhower was made Commander of this operation
  • Battle began on June 6, 1944, also known as D-Day
  • There was 156,000 British, American, and Canadian forces

FACTS ABOUT THE ATTACK (U.S.A.)

  • These forces landed on 5 beaches along a 50 mile stretch of the heavily fortified coast
  • The coast of France's Normandy region
  • The invasion was one of the largest amphibious military assault in History
  • This mission required lots of extensive planning
  • The Allies had constructed a large-scale deception campaign
  • Was intended to mislead the Germans about the intended invasion target prior to D-Day

FACTS ABOUT THE ATTACK (U.S.A.)

  • Late August 1944 all of northern France had been liberated
  • By the following Spring the Allies had defeated the Germans
  • Normandy landings were called the beginning of the end of war in Europe
  • A total of 9,300 troops and U.S. Servicemen were killed in the battle of D-Day or subsequent missions
  • The Normandy American Cemetery now holds these bodies

FACTS ABOUT THE DEFENSE (GERMANY)

  • 21,500 Axis soldiers are buried dead at LaCombe defending Normandy
  • There were 4 defensive sectors (Names Unknown)
  • 18 German Regimes were made out for the defense
  • The beach had over 15,000 concrete bunkers and 500,000 men
  • It was considered the most heavily guarded place on earth

CHALLENGE QUESTION

  • Why did they carry out the attack when the spot they came from was a terrible spot to attack at, and the Axis knew they were coming?
  • Answer: They would've replanned a spot of entry in the attack, but their was no time to delay and were forced to sacrifice a majority of their men at the beach
