OUT OF THE NIGHT THAT COVERS ME

MARY ASHLYN PEARCE

In the long run was it best for John that he was not spared his struggles? Do you think children today are too sheltered? Not sheltered enough? In the long run it was best that John was spared his struggles. John was too sheltered and needed to understand life. He realized there is a lot more than his little basement. His mom was good to do that, but it did not help him out when he was in Lower Peachtree. Some children are too sheltered and don't know about what is outside their little life, like John at the beginning. Also, in big cities there are kids where their parents let their kids go out on the street and those kids get in to trouble for doing things they aren't supposed to do.

Was Aunt Nelda trapped in her way of life any more so than women today? Yes, Aunt Nelda was trapped in her way of life. There are more jobs for women that she couldn't have done. Some jobs wouldn't let women work. Also she was stuck where she was until Uncle Luther could get enough money from cotton farming. As soon as they got enough money, they could move back in to town. She also had to cook and take care of their house. She had a very rough life. Her husband drank up all of their money.

If you were spirited back in time to live in the story, which character would you want to be?Why? If I went back in time to live in the story, I would want to be Mrs. Vance. Mrs. Vance has a pretty good life even though she lost her daughter. Mrs. Vance helps everyone. She does the cleaning & cooking around the house. She loves her husband even though they might disagree sometimes. She accepted John to stay at her house. Mrs. Vance is a very good person, which is why I would want to be her in the book.

The books ending did not end with everyone living "happily ever after." Were you satisfied with this ending? Do you think it was realistic? The books ending was very sad. I wish that Tuway & Ella could have lived Tuway's dream. I think that John going back to the Spraig's house was confusing, because his life was so bad there. I think that the ending was realistic. The ending made sense. John's decisions just surprised me.

What elements in the story point out the good and bad sides of a small town life? There are many good and bad sides of a small town life. The good side of a small town life is that eveyone knows who everyone is, like everyone knew that John was new to town. Everyone knows everything, this could also be bad because you can get a bad reputation. L.B. was known by almost everyone. His reputation was not good at all. Another bad thing is the rumors. Rumors can be true or a lie. Rumors were about the workers disappearing, such as, R.C. and Willa.

Did John's transition match, in any way, the transformation that was taking place in the South as it was drawn kicking and screaming into a new era? The South is changing just like John. John is growing up physically. John also is learning about the outside world. African Americans are wanting to gain their Civil Rights. John is wants freedom away from the Spraig's. The African Americans want freedom also. The African Americans wanted a better way of life.
