Background

  • Gutenberg invented the printing press
  • he was able to mass produce books
  • he also printed the bible
  • that way people could read it themselves cheaper
  • His printing press changed how we live today

Thesis
Gutenburg's printing press influenced modern times, for instance the availability for people to think independently and the advancement
of paper.

Gutenburg's printing press influenced modern times, for instance the availability for people to think independently and the advancement
of paper. Really all this is saying is that we still use the type of paper that was needed for this printing press and led to people having their own opinions.

PAPER ADVANCEMENT

  • His Printing Press affected the way we make paper
  • We used to use Papayrus from the chinease
  • Fourdrinier paper making became the new way of making paper
  • We still use it today, although its a bit more adavanced
  • This new process can be considered part of our industrial revolution
My First Reason is that he lead to the advancement of paper
It affected the way we make paper today
We used to use Papayrus from the Chinese but that has changed because of his machine
Fourdrinier paper making became the new way of making paper, or the modern way
We still use it today, though we have advanced it to meet our needs
This new process can be considered part of our industrial revolution

This is one of the Fourdrinier Paper making machines
1807 France
1. Pulp was fed onto a belt of wired cloth
2. The water drained through while the sheet was left on the surface
3. The cloth was then smoothed out
4. It was then cut as needed
The fourdrinier brothers could sell 60-100lbs a day to 1000 lbs per day

"Before this era a book or a newspaper was a rare luxury object and illiteracy was normal. With the gradual introduction of cheap paper, schoolbooks, fiction, non-fiction, and newspapers became slowly available to nearly all the members of an industrial society".

"Before this era a book or a newspaper was a rare luxury object and illiteracy was normal. With the gradual introduction of cheap paper, schoolbooks, fiction, non-fiction, and newspapers became slowly available to nearly all the members of an industrial society".

Books were not common, they were expensive since the scribes had to hand write them which could take years. Now the printing press can mass produce them.

GUTENBERG'S BIBLE

  • Priests would read the bible to the people
  • Books were expensive so there was only one copy for them
  • Once gutenberg's bible came out people could read it themselves
  • This is because they became less of a luxury and less expensive
  • People could now have an independent perspective on their religion
My second reason is how he led to the independent thinking through his bible
Priests would read the bible to the people since they were so expensive
Books were expensive so there was only one copy for them
Once gutenberg's bible came out people could read it themselves
This is because they became less of a luxury and less expensive
People could now have an independent perspective on their religion

This was one of the bibles he printed
200 of them were printed on cotton rag linen paper
30 of them were copied on velum animal skin
22 copies are still available today, 7 on velum
Each is worth 100 million today
They were written in Latin

"Common to all strands of Protestantism was the belief that each individual could interpret the ‘word of god’ by studying the bible themselves – independently of (Catholic) church hierarchy and authority".
-Tomlinson. The Fourdrinier Paper Making Machine

"Common to all strands of Protestantism was the belief that each individual could interpret the ‘word of god’ by studying the bible themselves – independently of (Catholic) church hierarchy and authority".

This quote is pretty much self explanatory, all it's saying is that those who go to church can interpret the 'word of god' themselves.

Conclusion
His printing press changed the way of our society. We take books for granted, we can all think for ourselves, and we have paper. Without his invention where would our society be today.
