  • Many rivers and streams
  • Vast forests

EFFECTS OF GEOGRAPHY ON THE NATIVE AMERICANS

  • Caused them to divide into two groups:Algonquins and Iroquois
  • Algonquins occupied the Atlantic seaboard
  • Iroquois occupied the Great Lakes area

PRE-COLUMBIAN LIFESTYLE OF THE ALGONQUINS

  • Cleared forests to plant crops
  • Women worked with crops
  • Men did hunting
  • Relied on Iroquois for trade

  • Men joined wifes family once married
  • Iroquois league united 13 Iroquois tribes and was feared
  • Relied on Algonquins for trade

POST-COLUMBIAN LIFESTYLE OF THE ALGONQUINS

  • Very little changed however they became a main obstacle to the colonists
  • Signed many peace treatys with the colonists
  • Where abused

  • Combined 5 tribes to form a great force
  • Could be considered a republic
