Theodore Schwann
Rudolf Virchow

3.
WHAT THEY DID
Hooke discovered small holes in cork, and called them cells
Leeuwenhoek was the first to describe cells, called animalcules
Schleiden proposed that all plants are made of cells
Schwann said that both animals and plants were made of cells and cell products
Virchow proved that cells come from pre-existing cells

4.
PRINCPLES OF THE THEORY
All organisms are made of cells
All cells are produced by other cells
The cell is the most basic unit of life

Exothermic
5.
PROKARYOTIC CELLS
No nucleus or cell membrane
DNA suspended in cytoplasm
Prokaryotes are single celled organisms
6.
EUKARYOTIC CELLS
Have a nucleus and membrane bound organelles
Nucleus encloses genetic information
May be multi or singular celled
