- In 1687, Governor Andros arrived to take the charter.
- There was a large meeting to discuss the matter.
- The charter was placed in the middle of the table.
- The candles all went out.
- After the room was re-lighted, the charter was gone.

- Captain Wadsworth of Hartford is credited with taking the charter.
- Captain Wadsworth placed the charter in a hollow spot in a large oak tree.
- This tree became known as charter oak.
