  • A measure of how unequal society is towards women & men
  • A low number (1-10) is excellent
  • a high number (100-150) is horrible
  • 187 countries

  • India = 134 (out of 187)
  • limited career options
  • limited access to health care
  • limited access to education
  • not paid the same as men
  • physically & emotionally abused

The current horror

  • 16 December, 2012
  • 23-year old university student & her male friend
  • after watching a movie, got on a bus
  • 6 men (including driver) on the bus

The current horror

  • 5 men beat the male friend, gagged him & knocked him unconscious with a metal bar
  • The 23-year old woman, Jyoti Singh, was repeatedly raped and beaten
  • Eventually they were both thrown off the moving bus

  • The man survived, but...
  • Jyoti stayed in hospital for 13 days
  • She was flown to Singapore for emergency care
  • She died in Singapore on 29 December

The result

  • Massive protests around India and the world
  • It put these issues of violence against women in the spotlight
  • India now has stricter laws and consequences for people who are guilty of these crimes

And the 6 men?

  • 1 has 10 years in jail
  • 1 committed suicide in jail
  • 4 were given the death penalty

Something to think about

every 2 minutes, a woman is a victim of a crime in India

a woman is raped every 15 minutes in India

and keep in mind, the majority of these crimes are unreported

India is recently considered a new star in the world

...but with news like this, the rest of the world needs to speak up
