Jack Layton

Born July 18, 1950 in Montreal and raised in Hudson, Quebec then died August 22, 2011 at the age of 61.

Layton was born into a united reformed family then later attended a community church in Toronto.

William Steeves was Layton's great-granduncle and was a Father of Confederation. His grandfather, Gilbert Layton, was a cabinet minister in the Union Nationale government of Maurice Duplessis in Quebec.

Jack Layton originally married Sally Halford in 1969 then later divorced her in 1983. Five years later he married Olivia Chow and had two children, Mike and Sarah.

Layton was a professor in Ryerson University and University of Toronto. He also wrote several books including Homelessness, Speaking Out, and Speaking Out Louder.

Path to Success:

Jack was the student council president in high, and he predicted in his yearbook that he would be in politics (he was correct).

He graduated from McGill University in 1970 with an Honours Bachelor of Arts in political science and became a member of the Sigma Chi fraternity. In 1969-70 he was Prime Minister of the Quebec Youth Parliament.

He was first elected to Toronto City Council in 1982 and quickly became one of the most outspoken members of council.

He was elected the leader of the National Democratic Party

Everyday Jack would usually do Government orders, review papers, and adjournment proceedings.
