FRENCH REVOLUTION TERMS TO KNOW
Human rights is the basic rights given to all people.
Tyranny is the unjust use of power, by the French Monarchy.
King Louis XVI was a weak and extravagant leader in a time of crisis. He had incurred great debts caused by war and his own spendings.
Queen Marie Antoinette was Austria-Born and died during the reign of terror.Tried to flee to Austria ,but we're arrested and returned to Paris.
Estates is broke down into three social classes. First clergy or church officials. Second aristocracy or nobles. Third middle class and peasants.
Estates General was the French Legislative body made up of representatives from each estate.
Bourgeoise were the middle class.
National Assembly was a government consisting of delegates from the third estate.
Fall of the Bastille was when a mob of peasants stormed the Bastille,a prison and armory. Peasants got weapons and tore down the Bastille because it was a monument showing the Kings power.
Tennis Court Oath is when people gathered on the king's tennis court to write a new constitution for the government.
Declaration of the rights of man and citizen was written by Marquis de Lafayette, said government got its power from the people.
National Convention was when the legislature took over in the form of it. Declared France a republic based on human male suffrage.
Radicals were people who favor quick and far reaching changes to set up a new government.
Jacobins were a radical revolutionary group
Robespierre was a a radical who gained increased power until he became the leader of the Committee of Public Safety in mid-1793
Reign of Terror was when violence escalated with the mass executions.
Directory was when France was ruled by five moderate men.
Napoleon Bonaparte made a name for himself in the French army. When the directory lost favor he took over by Coup D'état to gain power.
Dictatorship is when a person has absolute power over the people.
Napoleonic Code was created by Napoleon Bonaparte and created a new legal system based on Enlightenment ideas.
