TOGETHER

ELLA EYRE

Ella Eyre is part of Virgin EMI Records, which is owned by Universal Music Group. This means the a lot of money is available for this artist to create good quality songs, and promotional tools to go alongside them.

Narrative: This music video is begins with Ella Eyre at work in a supermarket, looking very bored. She then gets rescued by her friends who all then decide to buy a camper van and go travelling. The video follows them to various locations such as beaches and bridges.

A Birdseye view shot is used at the beginning of the video to show how isolated they are. However the lyrics contradict this as they are about being 'together', therefore the meaning of this song is that however isolated the location is you won't be alone if you have your friends.

This close up is shown as the lyric 'the fight has just began is used'. It shows how bored she was in life, and was struggling to stay in it.

This close up is shown as the lyric 'the fight has just began is used'. It shows how bored she was in life, and was struggling to stay in it.

Within this shot we also see Ella wearing red clothes, lipstick and nail vanish. Red symbolizes passion, love and anger. This shows she is confused and angry at her life, and wants to get out to enjoy herself and find love. It could also symbolize that she is daring and willing to do anything to escape.

This mid shot is used so the audience can clearly see the no trespassing sign, while the two people on the right trespass. This suggests that teenagers are all rebellious, this is negative as not all teenagers break rules, but also positive as it shows them to be fun and adventurous. The mid shot was used instead of another shot to highlight the relationship between the sign and the teenagers.

A wide shot POV is used when all the friends are running towards the sea. This is done to show the setting and how they are simply having fun all together. The POV has been used to make the audience feel involved within the action and therefore will enjoy the video.

Throughout this video the friends are wearing typical clothes of teenagers, such as skinny jeans and trainers. This has been done to show that they are just normal teenagers, and therefore the teenagers with identify with them.

Slow motion is used a few times throughout this, for example when they are jumping on the bed. This again helps to emphasis that they are teenagers having fun. This will make the audience identify with them and feel as though they are the same.

Editing

  • At the end of the video fast past editing is used. It cuts to the beat of the song and includes shots from all the locations previously seen within the video. This is almost like a summary of the rest of the video to show that all the friends had a good time (especially Ella).
  • Cross cutting is used to create an association between each scene, and show that they are all together in lots of places. This shows that they are all really close, and to be 'together'.
  • Ella Eyre has prevalence within this video, this is due to her being the main artist and therefore the record label will want to promote her and illustrate that she sings her own music (instead of lip synching).

Andrew Goodwin

  • The main example of how this video fits into Goodwin's theory is the use of close ups. They are used throughout of Ella Eyre singing.
  • The video also has a performance aspect to it as Eyre regularly sings to the camera.
  • There is an association between lyrics and visuals, for example when Eyre sings 'together' she is usually surrounded by friends while they are having fun.
  • Finally there is an association between music and visuals and cut editing is used at the same time of the beat.

Representation

  • The key area of representation within this is age (teenagers). The video consists of Ella Eyre and four other teenagers/ young adults.
  • They are presented as being fun and spontaneous, for example they all go and buy a camper van in order to travel with eachother. This is a positive representation as it seems as though they have no cares in the world, except to have fun, which is what many teens lives are like.
  • However they are also presented as being rule/law breakers, as they break into an abandoned house. This is shown in a positive light as they are having fun, this could be dangerous as it suggests to the audience that it is fine to break laws.

Familia was the production company for this music video, they are based in London who aim to use 'compelling imagery' to create a 'strong visual image'. They create both music videos and also adverts, clients have included Doritos, Sigma, Fuse ODG and Levis.
They are an up and coming production company who are working with new and modern artists, they are likely to become very well known within the future.

Craig Moore

  • Craig Moore directed this video and is a key director for Familia. He has worked with clients such as Sigma, Blonde and Connor Maynard.
  • A re-occuring theme throughout Moore's work are young people having fun outside in the sun. This is a common theme throughout music videos, as their target audience is predominately young adults.

My Opinion

  • I like this video as it is centered around teenagers having fun, and doesn't necessarily focus strongly on a story line or a performance. I like this combination as it creates variation between music videos, it also did not come across as tacky.
  • This therefore may influence my video as I find this combination to be very effective
