WHAT ARE NSAIDS?

NSAIDs are used to help people especially elders with inflammation of the joints that cause unneeded pain.

SIDE EFFECTS

  • Indigestion, heart burn, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, and anorexia
  • Flatulences, diarrhea, or constipation
  • Silent ulceration

LESS COMMON SIDE EFFECTS

  • Prolonged bleeding time
  • Liver toxicity & kidney dysfunction
  • Hypertension, exacerbation of heart failure
  • Bronchospasm
  • Visual or hearing problems
  • Increased risk of cardiovascular problems

DIFFERENT TYPES OF NSAIDS

  • Ibuprofen ( Advil, Motrin, Nuprin )
  • Naproxen (Aleve, Naprosyn)
  • COX-2 inhibitors (Celebrex)

PATIENT EDUCATION

  • Administer with food.
  • Not exceeding dosage.
  • Do not take aspirin, alcohol, or any other drug at the same time.
  • Possibility of silent bleeding.
  • Reducing dosage of NSAIDs and substituting acetaminophen.
  • Try to exercise and heat control for pain.

CONTRAINDICATIONS

  • Irritable Bowel Syndrome
  • History of GI problems
  • Uncontrolled hypertension
  • Kidney disease
  • Myocardial Infarction
  • Pregnancy and Lactation
