What Metrics Should You Track on a SharePoint Dashboard?

Published on Nov 05, 2022

The SharePoint dashboard is an important part of your SharePoint solution that allows you to see all your tables, lists, and other crucial items in one place.

Below are the key metrics you should track on the SharePoint dashboard.

Throughput

The amount of work that can be done by an application server (or servers) on behalf of users in a given period is called throughput. Throughput has two main uses:

• It can be used as a predictor for future capacity needs, allowing you to determine if you need more servers or whether it’s time for hardware upgrades. • It allows you to determine how much demand there will be in the course of a day, week, or month based on historical data. Hence, when it comes time to plan out updates, capacity planning will already be done and ready!

Simply put, Throughput is a good indicator of how busy your SharePoint environment is.

Average Page Load Time

Average page load time is the average time it takes a user to load a page. This metric is important for your organization as it affects user experience. Users have less patience when they experience slow performance or errors when accessing content. This makes them less likely to return.

You can also use this metric as an indicator of how well your SharePoint server is performing, which allows you to see if there are any bottlenecks in your system that need fixing before they become major problems down the line.

Time of First Response to a Page Request in Milliseconds

Your dashboard should be able to give you information about how long it takes for a user to see the first response to their page request. If this metric is high or low, that could mean you have too many requests coming in at once and need more resources (like CPUs) dedicated to processing them faster.

Or, the system is underutilized and bottlenecked by these same resources, so they're unable to respond as quickly as they could otherwise. To fix this, check other metrics to determine if there are issues with how your application is being used.

Looking for a way to measure the performance of your SharePoint data center? Focus on the above metrics, and you will have a successful project.
