Curriculum Compacting: A process for differentiating curriculum based on a student's prior mastery of unit objectives

When you compact curriculum, you streamline the material based on a student's prior mastery of the unit objectives.

Students who...

  • May be 1-2 years above the core curriculum of their grade level
  • May know a good portion of the material before it is taught
  • May not know the material in advance, but may learn it more rapidly and with fewer repetitions

We want students to...

  • Learn vs. Show what they know
  • Appropriate struggle (learning requires effort)
  • Experience failure as a normal part of learning
