HELPING IN CALAIS

Calais - People to People Solidarity - Action from UK
This group is a place to organise practical aid (donations and volunteering support) from the UK to those stranded in Calais. There are other groups for Syria, Greece and Dunkirk.

DONATING GOODS

To Northern France
IMPORTANT: Do not collect without checking what is needed and the quality/sizes. If you do not sort, you aren't helping.
Various groups working in the camp since summer 2015 have agreed to the following system so that aid is received and distributed as efficiently, sensitively and speedily as possible. Their decisions have been made with the full agreement of L'Auberge Des Migrants, an NGO with many years' experience of working in "The Jungle". To deliver aid to the L'Auberge/Help Refugees warehouse or to distribute aid in the camp with the support of experienced volunteers visit http://www.calaidipedia.co.uk/what-how-to-donate or please email calaisdonations@gmail.com

VOLUNTEERING

The Help Refugees/L'Auberge des Migrants process for Northern France
There is a specific system in place to help you help refugees while respecting their privacy and dignity. Visit this page to see the flow chart of which email address to use. You will be contacted and asked to complete forms about your volunteering skills and availability. If you have specific skills, such as education or medical there are specific pages linked to where you can find out more about what is needed.

UNSUITABLE DONATIONS

Pre-Loved Treasure UK
Not for profit charity shop that buys its stock in from the unwanted donations given to the refugee crisis to then supply aid locally and for humanitarian projects.

Come and buy some of the donations that aren't suitable for Calais (too big, too posh, too "worky", too vintage) and coolify your wardrobe https://www.facebook.com/prelovedtreasureuk/

FINDING/SHARING LIFTS

Liftshare - Calais and Dunkirk Refugee camps
I thought it might be a good idea to have a group to connect volunteers who can find liftshare with each other to the camps of Calais and Dunkirk.

LAW & POLITICS

Law of the Jungle - People to People Solidarity

OPEN THE BORDERS CAMPAIGN

Calais Migrant Solidarity (No Borders)

Calais Migrant Solidarity is a group who act and speak out in solidarity with the migrants of Calais

https://calaismigrantsolidarity.wordpress.com/

https://twitter.com/calaisolidarity

Since 2009 CMS has been working in Calais to document, communicate and resist police violence. We also offer legal support and provide welfare information. We act in solidarity with all those trapped by the border.

We believe that the world should not be globalized through capital but through solidarity, mutual aid, and cooperation. We work against the state and its borders and believe in freedom of movement for all.

Just to re-iterate, this group is anti-capitalist by nature. You will not find sympathies for police, border agencies or any other instruments of repression used to protect borders here.

The group has been in existence for a long time before the influx of associations/charities and aid agencies over the summer, this is not to say that we are better or know more, only that our politic is AGAINST BORDERS and one of solidarity not charity.

The group is political by nature and about taking POLITICAL ACTION to change a fundamentally fucked system. This is not to say that we disagree with any of the good work going on in the jungle that the associations and other charities are doing, simply that we aim to provide a political platform for political action rather than humanitarian action. If bad comments about the state/political parties/the police/fascists offend you, please go somewhere else rather than boring everyone here with your endless academic debates. We have better things to do than debating our core principals on Facebook. Ta very much then.

CALAIS FOOD DISTRIBUTION

Calais Kitchens
Calais Kitchens is a network of volunteer-run kitchens in the Calais 'Jungle' refugee camp, serving thousands of hot meals every day. If you would like to get involved please email calaiskitchens@gmail.com. More info in 'Files' as to what to expect when volunteering.

MEDIC SUPPORT IN CALAIS

Refugee Support First Aid & Care Team
We are a friendly collective of

https://www.facebook.com/groups/CRS.UKMEDTEAM/?

UK based health professionals & support staff providing 1st aid care in the Refugee camp in Calais on weekends (when there is no other medical care available in camp). Our aim is to provide safe first aid to refugees and volunteers in the 4 caravans we operate from (3 x for 1st aid, 1 x dental care). Routine Prescribing WILL NOT be permitted.

HOW DO YOU VOLUNTEER?
1) Read our FAQ document - http://on.fb.me/1OahqWF
2) Update the volunteer spreadsheet pinned to the top of the Group page with your details, location & professional background. Detail approx. or confirmed dates for when you can volunteer. Confirmed dates will be added to the rota by the admins. Being a medic is not necessary as we need all skills. Knowledge of first aid (wound cleaning) is a mandatory basic
3) PM one of the following Admins with your registration number (GMC, PIN, HCPC etc…) so your registration can be checked online before you arrive – Hassan, Tamsin, Sandy. Once this is done we will show you as registration confirmed in the spreadsheet
3) If you have prescribing experience & indemnity cover, let us know a week before so appropriate arrangements can be made. There have been incidents when people have just turned up and put us in a difficult situation. We are very vigilant about governance so please inform us

If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to ask us or anyone who has already been to Calais. We will be more than happy to respond.

You are professionally accountable for your actions/omissions and should always check with professional reps/legal advisers before leaving. You will be required to supervise other volunteers. Please bear in mind we are not an organisation but a group of volunteers, with aims similar to yours and thus unable to provide assistance with indemnity cover. Social media rules apply. Equality & respect are key to the success of this group. Trolling will NOT be tolerated. We are A-political. We will allow related posts but they should be appropriate. Report anything you feel inappropriate to Admins ASAP. Thank you on behalf of those you will be caring

REFUGEE PHONE CREDIT

Phone credit for refugees and displaced people
This is a group that aims to support refugees by helping to put them in touch with willing donors who will top up their mobile phones online for them.
Requests for credit will be limited to one per month per person. We will all do our best to track and avoid any abuse of the system where possible, but we also request that people treat a well meaning group with respect so we can help the maximum number of people.

CALAIS YOUTH CENTRE

Refugee Youth Service
https://www.facebook.com/baloosyouthcentre/info/?tab=page_info
Baloo's is a youth centre and project supporting 12 - 18 year old boys living in The Jungle refugee camp, Calais. This is a particularly vulnerable group as many young boys arrive to the camp unaccompanied and unable to access safe services and facilities including an open space where they are able to connect with others of the same age, secure shelter and sufficient clothing. It is these services that we aim to provide. The cornerstone of this project is the youth centre itself that acts as a safe, 'protective' space where the boys can come and relax, away from camp stress and adult influence. It also enables the building of trusting relationships with long term volunteers who can then track and monitor their safety as well as provide clothing and shelter needs through the centres existing connections.

CALAIS CARAVANS

Jungle Canopy
Improving living conditions for Refugee Families. Jungle Canopy is a UK operation delivering donated caravans and supporting the building of shelters etc.

https://www.facebook.com/junglecanopy/timeline

CALAIS LIBRARY

Jungle books library Calais
https://www.facebook.com/junglebookslibrarycalais/info/?tab=page_info

In "The Jungle" refugee camp, Calais, France, Jungle Books is a library and school for people to read, learn and enjoy as a safe space in a situation of depravity and degradation.
In two wooden buildings built by refugees and volunteers, we provide English classes, one to one reading sessions, computer access and book lending. From people who want to learn the very basics of a language to those who hour after hour pour through such classics as The BFG and treasure island as well as those who request books on psychology, cardiology, coding and many more advanced texts. We open everyday until late into the evening manned by volunteers and refugees alike, the weight of books providing a relaxed calm oasis in a camp of 6000 refugees rejected from society.
