MASK BACKGROUND

  • The tradition of wearing masks at Mardi Gras has evolved since the late nineteenth century. Originally the use of the masks was considered a diversion for poor people and the reputation of especially women who wore masks during Mardi Gras was in question. Today the wearing of Masks in Mardi Gras is widely practiced by all.

MASK WERE FORBIDDEN DURING THIS CELEBRATION

COSTUMES

  • In the early 1800s, masked revelers roamed the streets in celebration.
  • The first organized parade occurred in 1837
  • The masking tradition became under fire again in the 1840s when bandits began using the tradition for acts robbery and violence.
