We believe the plant in the betta fish container will grow better. To test which fish would be better to grow red lettuce we got a guppy and a betta fish. We put them in separate containers for 1 week and then we started to put the red lettuce seeds in. To grow the plants we used an empty Activia yogurt cup and a cotton ball. It takes 2-3 days on average for the lettuce to germinate. Our results were that the plant started to grow in the guppy container for 21 days, whereas the plant in the betta fish container never grew. On the 22nd day, the plant withered and stopped growing. Due to this experiment, we were able to determine that the guppy works better for the aquaponic systems.

MATERIALS:

  • Mason Jars (2)
  • Empty Activia Cups (2)
  • Guppy Fish
  • Betta Fish
  • Rocks (1 cup per jar)
  • Cotten Ball (1/2 of one)
  • Water (filled 3/4 full)
  • Betta fish food (1 pinch per day)
  • Red leaf lettuce seeds ( 5 seeds per jar)
  • Water treatment drops (4-5 drops)

PROCEDURES 1-8

  • Buy materials needed.
  • Clean all materials bought.
  • Put rocks (amount depends on size).
  • Pour in room-temperature water.
  • Put in 4-5 water treatment drops (let it sit in tank for 10-15 minutes).
  • Let fish sit in the given oxygen container for 10-15 minutes.
  • Release fish into water.
  • Add in oxygen pump.

PROCEDURES 9-16

  • Feed fish small amounts of food every morning.
  • Wait a week until putting any further object.
  • Empty yogurt cup (cup depends on tank size).
  • Add yogurt cup on top of tank.
  • Put rocks inside cup.
  • Split cotton ball in half.
  • Put 5-6 seeds between the split cotton ball.
  • Put cotton ball inside cup.

Conclusion
In conclusion, we found that the guppy worked better for the aquaponics system. We measured the height of the plants for 27 days. The seed in the guppy container germinated on the 5th day. The seed in the betta container never germinated throughout the project. This is how we obtained our results.
