ARCHETYPES 1984-GEORGE ORWELL
Outline
I. George Orwell uses any archetypes in writing his novel 1984. Some of them include, but are not limited to the hero shown by Winston, the maiden as Julia, and the sage being O'Brien.
II. Winston is a hero
A. What a hero is (Katherine Grimes) and (Murray H.A.)
B. How Winston is the hero (Orwell 74 and 239)
III. Julia is the maiden of 1984

"A book requires a good team of people working together in order to achieve a successful result". (Grimes) In 1984 Winston Smith plays the role of a hero. the hero archetype appears in all aspects of the world. All archetypal heroes share certain characteristics. A hero is most likely the "central character" (Murray H.A.), or a character who is strong and godlike. A hero predominantly shows goodwill and fights against evil in order to restore peace.

Winston smith is a hero. Winston May not be physically strong but this doesn't matter. Winston is mentally a strong man, no one around him understands what the party is doing to them but he does. He said " Until they become conscious they will never rebel and until after they have rebelled they cannot become conscious " (Orwell 74). Winston has a quest that is unlike most heroes' , his goal is to change the society. Although Winston appears to be an unlikely hero he shows many characteristics of a hero as the novel progresses.
