2 Year Pilot Program intended to create replicable model of multi-format public programming on broad themes of oral narrative and local history

Ten libraries chosen each year, RPL chosen in 2nd year

Grant included a recording kit that will be staying with the library, stipend, and training for two staff members (myself and Evanna DiSalvo) at StoryCorps Headquarters with rest of grantees in Brooklyn

Library system is made up of 10 Branches, 1 Central Library DowntownApproximately 209, 000 residents
Has been designated as an 'extreme poverty' city, more than half of children in the city live in poverty
In the last 10 years, also seen a significant increase in refugee and immigrant populations, as well as escalation in conflicts between these groups and existing residents in neighborhoods across city



Recorded from end of May through October, across 6 sites
Maplewood, Phillis Wheatley, Lincoln, Sully, Arnett and Central
Focused on one location a month
Exception being last month split between Arnett and Central Library
Followed Story Corps interview style
Asked individuals to come in with close friend, family member, staff member they are comfortable to be interviewed with (varying success)
40 minute long interviews
Archived at Library of Congress, StoryCorps, Rochester Public Library
Participants receive CD
Set up specific times/days for appointments, and had individuals schedule an appointment

Kit comes with digital recorder (interviews saved on SD card)

Two microphones that can be clipped on to tables

Digital Camera to take pictures

Release Form

Collected a total of 64 interviews over 5 months
Interviewed individuals from over 20 countries, ranging in ages from 16-90s
Did have large number of refugees who took part in program, but also large number of immigrants who had been in Rochester for a number of years
