PRESENTATION OUTLINE

THE NORSE CALENDAR

AN ANCIENT CALENDAR OF SCANDINAVIA (MOSTLY ICELAND)

In this calendar the years are/were split into two equal pieces; sumar (summer) and vetur (winter). There's a total of twelve months (six in sumar and six in vetur) in the year, much like the regular calendar widely used today, but they are off by about two weeks.

Gormánuður (TRANSLATED AS : SLAUGHTER MONTH)

  • The first month of vetur (winter).
  • Takes place from October 14th to November 13th.
  • On the first day of the month there's feasts called Veturnettr (or Haustblót.).This feast celebrates a good harvest and Freyr (information on Freyr on the next page).

"Freyr, also spelled Frey, also called Yngvi, in Norse mythology, the ruler of peace and fertility, rain, and sunshine and the son of the sea god Njörd... Worshiped especially in Sweden, he was also well-known in Norway and Iceland. His sister and female counterpart, Freyja, was goddess of love, fertility, battle, and death. The boar was sacred to both. Freyr and Freyja figure in many plays and stories of medieval Iceland." - from britannica.com (link can be found in the Bibliography).
