Governments in Ancient Greece

Greek settlements were separated from each other by seas and mountains

As a result, they did not see each other as one country.

Each settlement acted as its own city-state, with their own Laws, Armies, Money, and forms of Government

Monarchy

Power in the hands of one ruler 

Monarchy

  • In most Greek city-states from 2000 to 800 B.C.E
  • Most had a council of aristocrats (wealthy/powerful members of a certain social class) to help advise
  • Some ruled through dynasties, but many were appointed by aristocrat

Oligarchy

Power in the hands of a few rulers

Oligarchy

  • In most Greek city-states from 800 and 650 B.C.E
  • uled by a few, very wealthy/powerful members of the society
  • assed laws that only favored the rich
  • Enforced unfair laws through military force

Tyranny

Power in the hands of one, and is taken by force

In the mid-600's, Tyrants began overthrowing the corrupt oligarchies

Tyranny

  • In some parts of Greece from mid 600-500 B.C.E
  • Power is in the hands of one, but he is not the lawful king

Democracy

Power in the hands of the people 

Democracy

  • Started in Athens around 500 BC
  • Citizens shared the power
  • Citizens directly voted on every issue through an Assembly (law making group)
