FAMILY

• Mother was a house wife and a singer at the local temple
• Father was a clerk at a sari shop
• Mother gave birth to two more children who failed to make it past one
• Was born into a a Tamil Brahmin Iyengar family

SCHOOL AND EARLY LIFE

• Moved to Kanchipuram and joined a local school
• There, he got chickenpox and survived unlike the 4,000 people that died that year
• Moved back to Kumbakonam and joined the Kangayan Primary School
• Then he moved to Madras a attended a local school there and skipped many classes
• family moved him back to Kumbakonam for school

HIGH SCHOOL AND COLLAGE

• In school Ramanujan learned about quartic in 1902
• He set out to solve it
• The next year he tried to solve it but didn’t know it couldn’t be solved radically
